The barangay is the smallest unit of local government in the Philippines, equivalent to a village or district in other countries. Each barangay has its own chairperson (Punong Barangay), supported by seven councilmen (Kagawad) and a youth group (Sangguniang Kabataan). Barangays are grouped into legislative districts, which are the recognized units in Congress. In WikiPilipinas we believe in the power of the barangay, as this organization unique to the Philippines helps foster the spirit of togetherness in the country. Moreover, each barangay has its own history and significant personalities. We encourage everyone to start sharing these information and make people remember your own barangay's contributions to Philippine history, culture and society.
