Socorro C. Espiritu

Socorro C. Espiritu was an educator and sociologist. A happy wife, loving mother and a gracious grandmother. She was a successful career woman and an eminent sociologist. A combination rarely achieved in a life time.

Biography

Dr. Espiritu is the mother of three children, two of whom have married and have given her five grandchildren. The youngest is a senior student in the College of Business Administration of the University of the East. The oldest and the only daughter graduated from the College of Education at the University of the Philippine. Socorro Consunji, or Coring to her friends, was married to Atty. Jose S. Espiritu, thirty-three years ago. He continued her college studies in the College of Education at PWU. She earned her BSE degree at the same time that two of her elder children were in the same school (PWU) with her.

Accomplishments

In 1938 she started teaching in the high school department of the Philippine Women's University. Having passed the Senior Teacher civil service examination. In 1948 she became an instructor at the Philippine Normal School and was appointed as a Dean of Student affairs of the Philippine Normal College in 1950 and left the country as a Fulbright scholar. In 1952 she was granted an assistantship by the Syracuse University and in 1953 the University of the Philippines requested her to be a acting head of the Department of Sociology.
