Dr. Roman L. Kintanar was appointed Director of the Weather Bureau in 1958 at the age of 29, the youngest ever to hold the post anywhere in government service. He was the first Filipino to serve as President of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) from 1979 to 1983. He was one of the movers behind the creation of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee Secretariat in 1986 and served with distinction as Pacific/WMO Coordinator. For his achievements and contributions in the field, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) honored him by naming an asteroid after him. Asteroid Kintanar, measuring four to nine kilometer in diameter, orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter.
