Philippine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, Inc.
The Philippine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union Inc. (PWCTUI) is a SEC Registered, non-stock, non-profit organization, affiliated with the World Woman’s Christian Temperance (WWCTU).
It came about as challenge faced by Josefa Abiertas, the first Filipina woman lawyer who worked hard to uphold the "Dignity Worth and the Rights" of the down trodden, especially the “fallen women”. Atty. Abiertas became one of the ardent moral crusader, a philanthropist who launched campaigned against all forms of social vices (gambling, alcoholism, “white slavery”, immorality, prostitution, and abused women) that were so rampant during her time.
In her courageous, unrelenting crusade she initiated the organization and incorporation of the Philippine Woman’s Christian Temperance Union Inc., on September 15, 1929, an organization of Christian women bonded together for the protection of the home abolition of liquor, alcoholism, traffic immorality and triumph of Christ’s Golden Rule is Custom and is Laws.
Goals and Objectives
- To unite Christian women in serving and disseminating a scientific information of the physical, social and economic effects of social vices;
- To protect the home from social vices that threatens its stability;
- To cooperate with the government in the enforcement of its laws against the use of narcotics, smoking and alcoholism.
Atty. Abiertas being the First President of PWCTU, continued to use the organization for her comprehensive fight against social vices – Senators and Congressman were invited to the meeting of PWCTU to draw their attention to the deplorable plight of womanhood in the Philippines, emphasizing the need for a united effort to alleviate such conditions, she planned the establishment of an institution for the care and abused women and girls, the unwed mothers and their infants. After 4 years of her struggle to uplift the lives of the less fortunate, she died in her early twenties.

These departments are the implementing arms in coordination with the government and non-governmental agencies on the local, national, and international continue to draw participation from all sectors. PWCTC is a member of the World Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WWCTU), a worldwide organization of Christian women banded together for the protection of the home, the abolition of the liquor traffic, immorality, vices and the triumph of Jesus’ Golden Rule in custom and in law.
The PWCTU is group of Christian women, composed of eleven (11) elected Board of Directors. The Board is composed of President, Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Corresponding Secretary and PRO.
