Mariano Ching

Mariano Ching is a painter, photographer, and illustrator. He is a recipient of the Monbusho Japanese Grant and paints and draws portrayals of worlds that are most likely to be found only in a genius' imagination.

He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (major in Painting) at the University of the Philippines. He is currently a member of the Surrounded by Water Art Group, which ran the Surrounded by Water Galleries from the late 1990's up to 2004. His masterpieces have been exhibited not only for the Filipinos to see but also for nationalities of France, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and the United States. Some of his works also belong in prestigoiius art collections including that of the Singapore Art Museum.

He also studied printmaking at the Kyoto City University of Fine Arts. His artworks depict images of childhood monsters and dreamlike charcters. His expression of his art has been recognized by different organizations and on was awarded the Philippine Board on Books for Young People prize for his illustrations for the storybooks "Bakit Matagal and Sundo Ko" and "May Alaga Akong Puno." He was also given the highly coveted Cultural Center of the Philippines Thirteen Artists Award in 2006.
