Magdalena, book cover

Magdalena is the second novel of Cecilia Manguerra-Brainard published in 2002. It is a tale of generations of Filipino women as they experience life and love amidst the wars the Philippines faced.

Juana is pregnant with her first child. She wants to learn of her family's history and legacy. Through diaries, journals, letters, and memorabilia, Juana encounters the women from whom she is descendant. The story of her mother, Magdalena, and father, Nathan Spenser, is told in the context of a war in Vietnam. Her great-grandmother's stories--of how they gave up love for practical marriages-- are set in light of Philippine history from the first years of the American Occupation.
