Dr. Louis de Wecker (1832-1906) was a French physician and mentor to Philippine national hero, Jose Rizal.

Relationship with Rizal

Dr. José Rizal (1861-1896), martyr and national hero of the Philippines, completed his ophthalmological training under Professor Louis de Wecker in Paris in 1885. Under the guidance of de Wecker, Rizal learned different types of eye surgery, including the technique he would go on to use to treat the cataract of his mother, Teodora Alonso. It was the eye ailment of his mother that had motivated Rizal to pursue ophthalmology abroad.

When Rizal felt that he had learned all the surgery techniques he could from de Wecker, he moved to Germany to learn funduscopy and other basic ophthalmology aspects.
