Lilia Cuntapay (3 January 1935 – 20 August 2016) was a Filipino character actress dubbed as the “Queen of Horror of Philippine Movies.


Early life and education

She was born on 3 January 1935 in Cabiraoan village in Gonzaga, Cagayan. She was a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Education and worked as a teacher in Baybay, Leyte.


Career

She quit teaching and tried her luck in the buy-and-sell business. She also worked as part of the office staff in the National Police Commission (Napolcom).

She retired from work in 1982 at the age of 40 and pursued acting full time where she was typecast in horror films. She was part of the first batch of Actor's Workshop of LVN Productions. In 1991, she played the role of Kris Aquino's nanny in Shake, Rattle & Roll 3 directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes. The following year, Gallaga and Reyes cast Cuntapay as an old aswang in their film Aswang.

For 30 years in the industry, she made almost 100 films playing different scary roles like aswang and white lady, among others. After many years of being an extra, she topbilled her own film Six Degrees of Separation for the 2011 Cinema One Film Festival. It won for Cuntapay and Geraldine Villamin the best actress and best supporting actress awards. She was also nominated as Best Actress in the 35th Gawad URIAN for the said film.

Antoinette Jadaone directed Six Degrees, an indie mockumentary. It was Jadaone's first full-length feature before being identified with romantic comedies starting with the film That Thing Called Tadhana. In 2013, GMA News TV's Follow That Star featured Cuntapay's life behind the camera.

Death

In early August 2016, it was revealed that Cuntapay stopped working due to a spinal cord condition which made her disabled and unable to walk. She appealed to the public for financial assistance for her medical needs. Jadaone even launched an online campaign called “#OplanTulunganSiNanayLilia.”

She died at around 6 a.m. on 20 August 2016 at the house of his son, Gilmore Cuntapay, in Pinili, Ilocos Norte. She was 81.

Among her last projects was the blockbuster film My Bebe Love #KiligPaMore, the GMA sitcom Juan Tamad, and the ABS-CBN teleserye, Forevermore. In Forevermore, her character was one half of her love team with fellow horror character Nonong de Andres also known as “Bangkay.” Collectively known as Bangli, their tandem added kilig factor to the soap with their own pick-up lines.
