Issues and Controversies in Philippine Churches

The 1987 Philippine Constitution guarantees freedom of religion.

As stipulated in the Constitution: "The separation of Church and State shall be inviolable. (Article II, Section 6), and, No law shall be made respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination or preference, shall forever be allowed. No religious test shall be required for the exercise of civil or political rights." (Article III, Section 5).

Though seemingly inseparable especially in the case of the Philippines, Religion and Government are two entities of the society which are to be kept separate and independent from the other.

The relation of religion and homosexuality has been a never ending debate. But one thing is definite, such a stand varies greatly across time and place, within and between different religions and sects, and regarding different forms of homosexuality and bisexuality.

The Metropolitan Community Churches Philippines is a local Church of the Universal Fellowship of the Metropolitan Community Churches based in Los Angeles California, USA. MCC Philippines started in September 7, 1991 and has a special mission to reach out to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities in the Philippines. This is the first church to conduct the Rite of Holy Union or what some calls 'Same Sex Marriage'.


  • Bro. Eli Soriano charged for rape - Soriano was placed on the watchlist (November 11, 2005) of the Bureau of Immigration on charges of rape filed by his alleged victim, Daniel Veridiano, a member of Ang Dating Daan. Macabebe Regional Trial Court Judge Manuel Siayngco issued the warrant of arrest. Vedriano claimed that Soriano sexually abused him on May 17, 2000 and June 8, 2001 inside the religious group's convention center in Apalit town.

Eddie Panlilio runs for Pampanga Governorship - Father Panlilio defends his controversial decision to pursue a political role as a logical continuation of his ministry for the poor, whom he sees as having been exploited and neglected for too long by successive administrations of corrupt and uncaring politicians. This is a necessary move, he says, taken at an extraordinary moment in the life of the province.
