Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez, III (born August 13, 1952) is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the media-giant and publicly-listed firm, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation (Template:Pse). He is also the President of the ABS-CBN Foundation. In 2010, Forbes ranked him as the 36th richest Filipino with a networth of USD68 million.

Education

Gabi Lopez graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Bowdoin College in 1974. In 1978, he pursued Masters degree in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Pre ABS-CBN

After college, while the Philippines is still under martial law and the ABS-CBN Corporation under the control of former president Ferdinand Marcos, Gabby Lopez was employed at Crocker National Bank, where he served as Assistant Vice President in the bank’s back office processing area. He had an undistinguished banking career in the U.S. while waiting for work in his family’s media and utility interests in the Philippines.

ABS-CBN years

After the Lopezes acquired ABS-CBN once again, Gabby Lopez joined the company in 1986 as the Finance Director and became the General Manager in 1988. He also sits as a Member of the Board since 1986. He became the company’s President in 1993 and in 1997, when he was just 48 years old, Gabby succeeded his father, the late Eugenio “Geny” Lopez, Jr. as the Chief Executive Office and Chairman of the Board of ABS-CBN Corporation.

Also in that year, Gabby created the Lopez Communications Group, a management committee that oversees the development and implementation of convergence projects for ABS-CBN together with Bayantel and SkyCable, the Lopezes investments in telecommunications and cable telephony and data warehousing across the three companies.

Under his leadership of Gabby saw the steady growth of ABS-CBN businesses, while he aggressively pursued the company’s diversification into various successful ventures. These include Interactive Media, Sound Recording, Post-Production, International Cable and Satellite Distribution, Sports Programming and Licensing and Merchandising.

In 2008, Gabby appointed Charo Santos-Concho as the President and became the first woman to be hold the position.

Other positions in Lopez Group of Companies

Aside from being the head honcho of ABS-CBN, Gabby Lopez serves as the CEO and President of Bayan Telecommunications Inc. (formerly known as Bayantel). He serves as the President of Sky Vision and RCPI. He has also served as the Vice Chairman of the Board at Bayan Telecommunications and Treasurer Lopez Holdings Corporation (formerly known as Benpres Holdings Corporation) since 2010.

He is also a Member of the Board of Board of Directors of First Philippine Holdings Corporation (FPHC) since 2005 and was elected as Director of First Generation Corporation since 2009 following the resignation of Fiorello Estuar.

He is also the President of ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. and serves as a Board of Trustee of the Lopez Group Foundation, Inc.

Awards and Citations

In June 2009, Gabby Lopez and his sister, Gina Lopez were awarded “Outstanding Manilans Award”. Gabby was awarded for his leadership in Telecommunication and Broadcasting while Gina was awarded for her outstanding environmental advocacy.

Personal life

Gabby Lopez was born to Eugenio “Geny” Lopez, Jr. and Conchita La’O Lopez. His uncle, Oscar Lopez is the Chairman Emeritus of the Lopez Holdings Corporation while his other uncle, Manalo Lopez is the Chairman and CEO.
