Ester Chavez (1 May 1928-31 May 2021) was a veteran actress and the Queen of Filipino radio drama.

She started her radio career at 17. She was a star in Tia Dely’s daily radio drama. Her voice was recognizable to many generations in popular shows like Tangi Kong Pag-ibig and Ilaw ng Tahanan, where she was known as Aling Chayong.

As a character actor, she portrayed a variety of personalities from victim, mother, grandmother, counselor, to judge and mother superior. She appeared on television shows and films including including Tang-Tarang-Tang, Anna Liza, Kaya Kong Abutin Ang Langit, Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap, and Maging Sino Ka Man, among others. Director Joel Lamangan described Chavez as a very professional actress who arrives in the set ready and memorized all her lines. They appeared together in Lino Brocka’s Orapronobis. Her daughter in law, Boots Misa Chavez, added that now matter how small the part, Chavez gave it her 100 percent.

Before she had a stroke six years ago, she reported at DZRH for her weekly radio program. Even in her retirement and in illness, she retained her perfect comic timing and wit and cracked up her family and caregivers with her dry humor.

She passed away on 31 May 2021 due to old age complications. She was 93. She was married the late Col. William Chavez. She is survived by her two sons, Armando and Andrew. Her only daughter, Annabelle, passed in August 2020. Chavez was a grandmother to 10 grandchildren and four great grand kids.
