Corazon S. dela Paz-Bernardo is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and was the former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Social Security System (SSS), and became the first woman in its history to head the highest management position. Currently, she serves as an Advisor to the Audit Committee of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT). She topped the 1960 Philippine board examination for certified public accountants.

Education

Bernardo is a Business Administrative graduate (magna cum laude) from the University of the East (UE) in 1960. In 1965, Ms. De La Paz- Bernardo earned her Masters in Business Administration Degree at Cornell University under a Fullbright grant and a UE CPA Topnatcher Scholarship.

Professional profile

Bernardo currently serves as an advisor to the Audit Committee of PLDT. She made history by becoming the first, woman-President and CEO of the largest state-owned pension fund Social Security System until Romulo Neri replaced her in 2008.

She was also the first woman to be admitted as a Senior Partner and Chair of Joaquin Cunanan and Co. in 1981; and with PricewaterhouseCoopers Worldwide International in 1973.

In the corporate set-up, she served as the Corporate Advisor of the Yuchengco-owned House of Investments, and was the former Vice President of the Equitable-PCI Bank, and becoming its Chairman in 2006.

Other designations

De La Paz serves as trustee to various non-government and non-profit organizations including Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Philippine Business for the Environment, Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication, Makati Business Club, Miriam College, Meralco Foundation, and Cornell University.

She is also a member of the American Chamber of Commerce-Strategic Issues Committee, Pacific Basin Economic Council (Philippine Chapter), Australian National University - International Advisory Board of the Managing Business in Asia Program, Bilateral Business Councils of the Philippines.

In addition, she serves as member of the Board of Advisors of the Asian Institute of Management, University of Asia and the Pacific School of Management Advisory Council, and Ramon del Rosario Center for Corporation Social Responsibility. She is also a Board Member of the ASEAN Social Security Association, the Philippine Social Security Association and Home Development Mutual Fund.

Awards and recognitions

She topped the 1960 Philippine bar examination for certified public accounts. She was also named by the Philippine Professional Regulation Commission as Outstanding Professional in the field of Accountancy in 2007. Bernardo was also honoured in 2006 with the Communication Excellence in Organization by the International Association of Business Communicators.

Other awards she had received included the Lifetime Achievement Award for Accountancy by the Association of CPAs in Public Practice in July 2006, and a Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountant (PICPA) Hall of Fame Awardee in 1995.
