Clara Rita A. Padilla
Clara Rita A. Padilla is the founder and executive director of EnGendeRights, Inc. She is prominent in women's circles as a feminist lawyer, writer, policy maker and women's rights activist.
Padilla graduated from the University of the Philippines with a bachelor's degree in communication in 1988. She pursued law studies at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law and graduated with the degree of Juris Doctor in 1993.
She was a Visiting International Legal Fellow at the Center for Reproductive Rights, New York, N.Y., from July 2002 through July 2003 where she researched international human rights standards on reproductive rights. Among her research topics were the shift from China’s one-child policy into law; a shadow letter on the Philippines for the United Nations Human Rights Committee; the legal and political framework of seven countries in East and Southeast Asia; and the historical background of forced sterilization of Roma women in Slovakia. She was featured as an Asian voice in the "30 Faces of Roe: Personal Perspectives on the 30th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade" publication of the Center.
She is a favorite on the lecture circuit, having delivered lectures on discriminatory practices against women, rethinking laws and policies on women, and discussions of jurisprudence from the United Nations Treaty Monitoring Bodies including CEDAW and the UN mechanisms to advance women's rights.
