Childbirth is a 1949 work in oil on canvas by Romeo Tabuena. It focuses on a woman in the severe pain of childbirth as she struggles to deliver the baby in her womb.[1] Measuring 110.5cm x 147.3cm, the painting is part of the Paulino Que Collection.

In Childbirth, a woman in the midst of giving birth is assisted by a manghihilot or folk healer serves as midwife and massages her hurling stomach. Tabuena’s style of painting depicts folk quality in a realistic situation and setting.[1]

Tabuena is known for a variety of styles and in some of his works such as Childbirth, his visuals approach Expressionism. In this painting, the pain a mother experiences to deliver her child are shown in dramatically lit elongated figures.[2]
