Online communities are communities which for the most part interact through the Internet. People who join online communities usually know each other through virtual identities, i.e., identities which may or may not correspond to their actual personas.
Online communities are considered as a 'supplemental' form of communication to real life interactions. People may join online communities built around a shared interest, to establish new friendships and social networks, or to reinforce their connection with a local community.
The biggest Filipino online communities are those which revolve around social networking sites (like MySpace and Friendster), blogs, and forums based on a specific interest (entertainment, arts, education) or social/demographic grouping (OFWs, for one).
