The Philippines has been home to some of Asia's sultanates, most of which are in Mindanao. A sultanate is a Muslim state ruled by a sultan, whose power can be considered similar to a governor. The Mindanao Sultanates have the longest political experience compared to other groups in the whole Philippines, reflecting the lasting contribution of the Philippine Muslims to the country’s national body politic.
