Synopsis
Delfin and Pilar are a married couple who join the battlefront of the Katipuneros against the Spaniards. When Delfin gets killed in an encounter, Pilar ascends to leadership in their troop and continues the fight for freedom. The Spaniards are finally defeated but a new colonizer arrives--the Americans. Undaunted, Pilar perseveres with fearless leadership in the Filipino-American War. When both have been laid to rest, engraved on their tombs are the words: "Here lies two children of Mother Country--Pilar Makabayan and Delfin Santos."
Notes
Through the character of Pilar, the novel portrays women not only as capable fighters but also as competent leaders in battle. She can be easily associated with the real-life heroine Gabriela Silang.
