Top 10 Filipino Songs of 2008
The year 2008 has indeed been filled with memorable Pinoy songs which entertained and touched the hearts of Filipino music lovers. Here are some of the hits that dominated the airwaves, by some of our homegrown artists and composers.
A Very Special Love
Performed by pop princess Sarah Geronimo, "A Very Special Love" is the official soundtrack of the blockbuster romantic-comedy flick with the same title which starred Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz. It never left the airwaves even before the film was shown last June 2008 up until the present. The song has been a chart-topper and one of the most requested songs on Philippine radio.
Ikaw ang Aking Pangarap
Sung by the concert king Martin Nievera, "Ikaw ang Aking Panagarap" was the theme song for the sensational TV series Lobo which was aired starting January 2008 on ABS-CBN, starring Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin.
Paano Na Kaya
After being declared the "2nd Star Dreamer" of ABS-CBN's talent reality show Pinoy Dream Academy Season 2, Bugoy Drilon has made a name in the music industry with his single "Paano na Kaya" from his first solo album titled Bugoy: Paano Na Kaya? under Star Records. Composed by Ryan Cayabyab, "Paano Na Kaya" was among the most requested OPM songs on the airwaves and has consistently been at the number one spot of most radio hit charts.
Performed by controversial host and comedian Willie Revillame, "Giling-Giling" can be heard on almost every radio station nationwide and is one of the most popular dance songs among children and adults alike. "Giling-Giling" made a splash just like Revillame's wildly popular songs from 2007, "Boom Tarat-Tarat" and "Iyugyug Mo".
From the group Sandwich, "Betamax" reached the top spot in local charts because of its catchy tune and the lyrics which made every listener reminisce about the simple life years ago. "Betamax" is from their album Marks the Spot.
After their album Fisheye was released, Callalily again made their mark in the music industry with their hit, "Susundan". The song, which is also Fisheye’s carrier single, is about “following someone you love who left without word of warning.” It topped the hit charts both on television and radio.
Popular Filipino band Sponge Cola has another hit with their single "Pasubali", the official theme song of the hit ABS-CBN koreanovela, Lovers. Sponge Cola released their album Transit last January 24, and hit platinum a week after its release. The album includes a bonus AVCD featuring 5 brand new tracks: "Tuloy Pa Rin", "Nakapagtataka", "Tuliro" (Acoustic Version), "Pasubali" (Acoustic Version), "Intercept", and "Pasubali" (Radio Edit). It also includes music videos of "Bitiw", "Nakapagtataka", "Tuliro", "Tuloy Pa Rin", "Movie", and "Pasubali".
Hale is behind this inspiring upbeat song, "Pitong Araw". The fourth track from their third album Above, Over and Beyond, the song has consistently reached the number one spot in top ten lists. The album promises its listeners a new sound and feel, and promises to be yet another hit for Hale.
Ang Sarap Dito
Raimund Marasigan of Eraserheads and Sandwich has launched another band called Project 1. This is the band behind the hit song "Ang Sarap Dito", which was used as a commercial jingle for Coca-Cola (Angel and a Demon), boosting its place in the music hit charts.
Now engaged in a solo career, former Rivermaya vocalist Rico Blanco claimed the spotlight when his single, "Your Universe" reached the top of the charts. This is Rico’s first studio album since he left Rivermaya several months ago.
