The Royal Audiencia was the royal court of justice in Spain and the Spanish Empire. It was a Spanish colonial institution created to assist the governor-general and to secure the people from abusive Spanish officials during the Spanish colonization period. It was created in 1583 comprising the governor-general as the president, three justices, a prosecuting attorney and other officials.
- It is the judicial arm of the colonial government. However, it also excercised some administrative functions, especially in the governor's absence or incapacity. Normally it acted as an advisory body and supported government decisions.
