[edit] Background and Education

Velasquez was born Regina Encarnacion Anson Velasquez on 22 April 1970 in Tondo, Manila, to Teresita and Gerardo Velasquez. Their family later moved to Hinundayan, Southern Leyte where she attended the Hinundayan Central School. When she was nine years old, her family moved to Balagtas, Bulacan. She continued her elementary education at Balagtas Central School and finished high school at St. Lawrence Academy.

[edit] Career

Velasquez participated in a nationally-televised amateur competition, The Tita Betty's Children Show, where she won third place for singing Buhat Nang Kita'y Makilala. At 14, she entered the senior division of Ang Bagong Kampeon, where she won for eight straight weeks and became the first grand champion of the show. She won a contract with OctoArts and released a single called Love Me Again. Viva Records also signed her to a contract in 1987. Aside from being a recording artist, she became a regular member of musical variety shows Triple Treat and Teen Pan Alley. Velasquez was chosen to represent the Philippines in the Asia-Pacific Singing Contest held in Hong Kong. She competed and won the grand prize which earned her the title “Asia's Songbird.” She was hand-picked by veteran-singer composer Jose Mari Chan to be his duet partner for his album entitled Constant Change which later received a Certified Diamond Record Award. In 1990, Velasquez signed with Vicor Records and released several albums under the label. She performed in her first solo concert in the United States entitled Narito Ako sa New York. It was held at the Main Hall of the famous Carnegie Hall on 11 October 1991 making her the first Filipino to stage a solo concert in that venue. At the age of 25, Velasquez became an international recording artist when the international company Polygram Records produced her first Asian album Listen Without Prejudice. Apart from her recording career, Velasquez also became active in the world of theater. She joined Ryan Cayabyab's musical adaptation of Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere in 1995, where she played the role of Maria Clara. She was later offered a role in the movie Wanted: Perfect Mother opposite Christopher de Leon, dubbed as the Philippines' "Drama King." Velasquez continued her career in singing but also took on being a product endorser, television host and actress.
