Press Release: WikiPilipinas Reaches 50K Articles

As of 8:30 a.m. of February 21, 2008, five months after its official launch at the 28th Manila International Book Fair, WikiPilipinas marked another milestone by achieving 50 thousand articles.

Also in February, WikiPilipinas underwent system upgrades, site revamps and reorganization. Read-or-Die’s Kristine Mandigma became the new WikiPilipinas Editor-in-Chief. The site was given a new look, its contents were reorganized, and new features were added. The Special Portals such as the Wiki Directories and Wiki Travel Guide and the Special Projects like WikiWorx and WikiLab were also given prominence.

WikiPilipinas is due to launch the special portal Encyclopedia of Philippine Women in March, and is currently hosting the Filipina Stories Writing Contest, ongoing from February 1 to 29, 2008. It also piloted an Online Writing Contest at the National Schools Press Conference in Koronadal, South Cotabato on February 19, 2008. Mandigma toured several schools in Region XI and Region XII as part of the WikiPilipinas advocacy of the Internet as a writing platform and preservation of Philippine history and culture.

Currently, the site has 3,282,256 articles and more coming in every day, WikiPilipinas is heading towards its next goal of 100 thousand articles.(By Maritoni Alvarez and Kristina Joy Panogot)
