Nelia T. Gonzalez is a known alumni leader and member of the UP Board of Regents. She received a “triple treat” from UPLB and the UPLB Alumni Association (UPLBAA) in recognition of her contributions to the University and the association with the formal launching by the UPLBAA of the UPLB Alumni Service Award and professorial chairs all named in her honor, and the release by UPLB of the Hibiscus Nelia variety on March 28 at the Discovery Suites in Manila.
According to former UP President Emil Q. Javier, the professorial chairs, which are part of the UPLBAA’s contribution to the celebratiion of the UP Centennial, will have a permanent endowment of P 5 million as seed money for research and an honorarium of P20,000 for the chair holder .
UP President Emerlinda R. Roman expressed her appreciation for the professorial chair, saying that it is timely in the face of UP’s loss of 400 faculty members, mostly from the College of Science and Engineering, which created a vacuum for middle-level positions in the UP System. According to her, with a PhP30, 000 monthly salary given to the highest paid official in UP, most would rather seek a job elsewhere.
Regent Gonzales considered the recognition bestowed upon her as a triple treat. She said, "The UPLBAA 's Service Award shall be my treasure as it shall be for all recipients. The benefits from the professorial chairs will allow a lot of work to be done and would help develop communities and children in the end." She also thanked UPLB for Hibiscus Nelia.
