The National Children’s Book Day is an annual celebration held every third Tuesday of July in commemoration of the publication of Jose Rizal’s rendition of the “Monkey and the Turtle” found in the July 1889 issue of Trubner’s Oriental Record in London.

It is a project organized by the Philippine Board on Books for Young People (PBBY). It was first held in 1984 with the theme “Books and Sharing” and has been nurturing the young and curious minds of children for 25 years. NCBD promotes the development of children literature and inculcates in them the love and joy of reading books at an early age.Its themes have messages that characterize books to children as friends, companions, playmates, and as a means of achieving their dreams, among others.

The PBBY Lifetime Achievement Award, PBBY Salanga Prize, and PBBY Alcala Prize are given to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the growth of children literature. The Grand Prize Winner of the 25th National Children's Book Day this 2008 went to Nanoy Rafael who received the PBBY-Salanga Prize for his winning story, Naku, Nakuu, Nakuuu! and the PBBY-Alcala Grand Prize went to Sergio Bumatay III.
