Mexicanovela is a term popularized in the Philippines referring to Spanish-language television series produced in Mexico. It combines the words "Mexican" and "telenovela", and as with "Asianovela", "Chinovela"", "Japanovela", "Jdorama" and "Koreanovela", originated on local internet forums before becoming widely used in the Philippines.

Popularity

The popularity of mexicanovelas in the Philippines has been attributed to the feudal and cacique setting which both Mexico and Philippines experienced as former colonies under Spain. The characters, particularly the heroine, are said to depict mentality and behavior reminiscent of the colonial years, despite the contemporary setting.<ref>http://www.asiafuture.org/csps2006/50pdf/csps2006_3c.pdf</ref>

It was in 1995 when the soap opera genre became a phenomenon in the Philippines with the Tagalog-dubbed broadcast of Marimar, a Mexican soap starring pop singer Thalía. The program enjoyed a tremendous audience share that led TV networks to import many other mexicanovelas to Philippine television.

As of March 2009, two other remade Mexican series are on the list of ABS-CBN's upcoming programs, Rubi and Maria Mercedes (the original of which starred Marimar's Thalía), which is estimated to air in 2010.
