Medical Center Manila (MCM) is a 250-bed tertiary hospital, licensed by the Department of Health and accredited by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation. MCM has provided the community with excellent healthcare, and on its 39th year, it takes its service forward with a major change - an overall renovation of the hospital.
MCM has continued to enjoy stability due to its reputation as home to many of the nation’s respected physicians in their field of specialization who have undergone extensive training locally and internationally, its affordable services, the “patients come first” philosophy & complimented by state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and personalized services of highly competent and caring hospital.
Six young Filipino doctors, returning to the Philippines after many years of specialized training in the United States, pooled their limited financial resources to set up in the City of Manila in 1965, a small laboratory with basic capabilities. This laboratory – the Medilab, was the beginning of a vision of a comprehensive medical care which would integrate a hospital with a complete line of services and a medical insurance system. Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. Paulo C. Campos, this vision was made into a reality when University Physicians’ Services, Inc., (UPSI) was organized on September 30,1965.
Backed financially by a non-medical group headed by Mrs. Soledad Lirio Dolor, UPSI established Medical Center Manila on July 29, 1967, the hospital was ready for occupancy. What it had to offer was overwhelming: the best and most advanced medical and diagnostic equipment and a staff of well-known and experienced consultants who are specialists in their respective fields.
In August 15, 1967, the hospital was inaugurated as Medical Center Manila with Dr. Paulo C. Campos as its first Medical Director. The blessing was given by Rufino J. Cardinal Santos. Under the administration of the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartres, it opened with an initial capacity of 176 beds for adults and children and 24 bassinets in the Nursery. It was on August 15,1982 when the MCM Extension was inaugurated and the blessing was given by Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin of Manila.
Over the years, the mother corporation, UPSI, has ventured into other fields like education, establishing the Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC). MCM provides training to the students in the medical and paramedical colleges.
Another major industry which the mother company, UPSI, has ventured into is the hotel business, the Pearl Manila Hotel. It is a luxurious hotel which offers excellent and professionalized services aligned with its state-of-the-art first class facilities. The Pearl Manila Hotel offers a sumptuous variety of Asian and International Buffet and likewise provides the dietary services of the hospital among others. Patients have the opportunity to pamper themselves and their family at The Pearl Manila Hotel, just across MCM, connected by a walk-way.
Operating for so many years in the health care industry is not just looking back at past accomplishments, but also looking forward to a future of continued trail-blazing and top quality health care delivery. MCM has always adopted the latest in medical practices and technology to meet the needs of its growing community, and is all set towards working on more expansion projects and technical advances.
MCM’s commitment to giving the best patient care possible has not changed to this day, as the “patients-come-first” philosophy championed by its founder, Dr. Paulo C. Campos, remains as the hospital’s top priority. Further, Dr. Campos sums it all in his Blue Print for a New Medical Center Manila: The program to rejuvenate the hospital in its totality can be like a phoenix in the horizon of our present society and millennium. The New MCM will rise to be one of the best hospitals and assert itself in the medical profession in Asia.
