The First Mass in the Philippines was held on 31 March 1521 on the island of Limasawa, Southern Leyte by the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan. Also the first baptism in the country, it marked the start of centuries of Catholic influence, making the Philippines the only predominantly Roman Catholic country in Asia. Magellan ordered the expedition's chaplain, Fray Pedro de Valderrama, to celebrate Easter Sunday mass. It was only a few days after the blood compact between Magellan and Rajah Kolambu of Leyte; because of this alliance, the rajah allowed Magellan and his men to come ashore to celebrate mass. Rajah Kolambu was also invited to the mass along with Rajah Siagu of Butuan, his brother.

"I am currently a fourth year high school student. I am still unsure of what course to take in college. I know I've always dreamed of becoming a doctor. But now, I am having second thoughts if I am really fit for it. Please help me decide. :( -Chynna"

Hi there Chynna! I remember the days when my classmates and I were too excited to enter a university. How time flies! Choosing what course to take is surely one of the hardest decisions to make in life.

The most basic consideration when choosing a college course is knowing what you want, something you've always wanted to get into. You can also go for a career assessment care of your local guidance office to make choosing a college course systematic and easier. Know what you're good at by assessing your skills and talents. Consider your values (fulfillment, meaning and fulfillment, altruism, etc) to help you determine what you would like to get out of a career besides material compensation. Look forward and assess your commitment to your chosen path. Be sure if you possess the skills and the patience to go the distance. You also need to look at the career options available within this major. A certain course may offer a diploma upon completion but doesn't guarantee a job. Check out the job placement statistics of others who have pursued your chosen degree. Keep these things in mind but be sure to follow your heart.
