Magandang Tanghali Bayan(MTB) (Good Afternoon, People, also usually referred to as MTB) was a defunct noon-time variety show of ABS-CBN run from 1998 to 2005. It holds an unofficial record on Philippine TV as the only noontime variety show that reformatted many times, with different set of main hosts. Its original set of hosts featured Roderick Paulate, Amy Perez, Christine Jacob, Randy Santiago, John Estrada and Willie Revillame.

The noontime show gained popularity because of its segment "Pera O Bayong", a game of chance where at stake was either a cash prize of P1,000,000 or a showcase chosen by the contestants (e.g. entertainment showcase, living room showcase, livelihood showcase, etc.) which were hidden in either 3 "bayongs" (rattan bags) marked as M, T or B. At the same time, "MTB" gained notoriety because of the beauty pageant "Calendar Girl", where the contestants were subjected to double-meaning questions and jokes thrown by Randy, John and Willie. Other popular segments included "Sa Pula o Sa Puti", "Munting Miss U", "Japorms", "Ano Ka Hilo?", "Wansa Funny Taym" and "Winner Take All".

MTB was then reformated as Masayang Tanghali Bayan & MTB: Ang Saya-Saya by year 2004-2005. Due of its low TV ratings, ABS-CBN cancelled the show to give way to the host Randy Santiago, John Estrada and Willie Revillame's new noontime variety show Wowowee.

Pera O Bayong

This became one of the more popular segments on MTB. The game's concept came from another Philippine TV show Kuwarta O Kahon (Cash or Box) which aired Sundays on RPN-9.

The original version of the game started with 50 players answering a series of multiple choice questions (A, B, C, or D), hoping to eliminate all others until only one remains. The most popular type of multiple choice question involved the scientific names of plants and animals, with at least two of the four choices noticeably joke answers.

If two people remain in the game and both choose the correct answer, the first person to arrive at his/her choice would be declared the winner.

The winner of the elimination round then moves on to the jackpot round where he or she begins by choosing on of three bayongs marked M, T, or B (for the show's title). Each bayong would contain a concealed piece of cardboard on which is written what the contestant in playing for.

There would be a bargaining session wherein the host (usually Willie Revillame) would offer cash (Pera) in exchange for the contestant abandoning the prize hidden in the bayong. After each offer, Amy Perez and Dick Paulate would lead the crowd in asking 'Pera O Bayong?', to which the contestant would declare his or her choice at that time.

The number of bargaining sessions would vary from day to day, depending on the mood/emotional status of both the host and the contestant. The prizes in the bayong would range from nothing, to 1 Million Pesos, a house and lot, a living room showcase, an entertainment showcase, to fruits and vegetables (like one watermelon).

In its early days, the producers/directors decided to flash the concealed prize at the bottom of the television screens during the bargaining sessions to let the public know what the contestant is playing for. Contestants then deviced a plan wherein their companion would proceed to the cafeteria at the ABS-CBN compound, look at the television there, and relay the prize back to other companions in the audience - which would then signal the contestant to choose the money or the prize, and not regret the choice. ABS-CBN then decided to switch of the television in the cafeteria during the jackpot round of Pera O Bayong. The producer/directors then decided to stop revealing the prize to the public, and let the viewers play along.

Pera O Bayong was reintroduced and became a reformatted segment on Wowowee and Happy Yipee Yehey with bayongs of 7 colors, instead of the usual three with three words of HYY. One of the bayongs contained showcase and cash prizes. Wowowee's version of Pera O Bayong however has 4 major prizes: P1 million, P2 million, house and lot from Globe Asiatique, or jeepney/taxi.

The show overtook its competitor in the ratings within its first two years, from 1999-2000, beating Eat Bulaga of GMA-7. However, after the suspension of Randy Santiago, John Estrada and Willie Revillame, its ratings steadily declined.

After the cancellation of MTB, an improved version of Pera O Bayong debuted as a part of Wowowee, but with 7 bayongs and larger prizes. It was later replaced by Wilyonaryo in late 2007, and then by Merrygalo. The game returned in January 2008, this time with 10 bags. Pera O Bayong was then replaced with "Want More No More" on January 1, 2009.

Eat Bulaga had a similar game as Pera O Bayong, called Laban O Bawi (Fight or Retreat)

Theme Song

Naughty at kalog sexy at bilog
Pilyo at pasok kontra sa antok
