Local Unit is a short independent film directed by Tad Ermitaño. The five-minute film was originally released as part of the 2006 omnibus work Imahe Nasyon (Image Nation), a compilation of twenty 5-minute shorts around the theme of what has happened since the EDSA Revolution. Local Unit is a horrifying tale of a third world country trying to keep up with the world's technological advances.
The film brings us to a bleak futuristic Manila wherein computers make use of actual human brains to function (which totally makes sense since a human brain's memory surpasses any supercomputer's); enterprising Filipinos, as always, find a backdoor to earn an extra buck out of the new technology, paying real poor Filipinos for their brains to activate the computers of the Manila middle class.
