Alejandro "Kim" Atienza, better known as Kuya Kim is the son of former Manila Mayor, Lito Atienza. He is a resident weatherman in ABS-CBN's early morning show, Umagang Kay Ganda (formerly Magandang Umaga Pilipinas-MUP) and in TV Patrol World's segment, "Weder-Weder Lang." His seemingly endless trivia about animals and general knowledge as well as his trademark--the wide-brimmed hat made him a well-loved/popular figure among children and students as well. He is part of the Who's Who of the Philippines list of the Philippine Tatler.
Politics or TV
A three-term Manila Councilor, Kim Atienza was a possible candidate to replace his father, former Mayor Lito Atienza in the 2007 elections. The former mayor was on his third and last term as mayor of the city and somebody from the family had to step into his shoes. He admitted that he ventured into television in order to gain maximum media exposure in preparation for his plan to run for Manila mayor until he was given the chance to choose between politics or television. He obviously chose to be a part of Philippine broadcasting.
Atienza started his stint on TV when he began hosting MUP's Animalandia, where he showcases his collection of animals including animal care tips and trivia. He soon was tracking weather until he became the resident weatherman, just in time with Ernie Baron's demise.
A father of three (Jose, Meimei and Eman), Kim is happily married to Fely Hung, president and founding member of Chinese International School Manila (CISM) Foundation, a fund-raising entity that envisions the establishment of a leading international school that pays homage to Chinese language and traditions.
An animal lover since he was a child, Atienza has become an advocate of responsible pet-ownership and pet-conservation. He started to collect animals (reptiles, parrots, turtles, etc.) since he was 11. His collection grew until it became a mini-zoo. He donated his pets to the Manila Zoo when he got married and had kids.
Kim Atienza is also known to be an environmentalist, supporting the Trees for Life, a nationwide tree-planting program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He also admires former United State Vice President Al Gore, who produced the documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, which warns of the inevitable global warming.
He considers himself a health buff, having fitness as one of his advocacy. He taught aerobics on television, teaching the right way to lift weights until he became a sportscaster.
Matanglawin (Falcon's Eye) is a multi-awarded educational program which premiered last March 24, 2008, aired every Sunday in ABS-CBN and hosted by Kim Atienza. This informative show covers almost all adventure topics from interesting trivia to queer animals, from nature's mysteries to the wonder of science.
Also known as Steve Irwin of the Philippines, Atienza will do a Steve Irwin role in Matanglawin. Irwin is the Australian host of Discovery Channel’s “Crocodile Hunter” known for his bravery in holding wild animals like crocodiles and snakes up close.
