Joy Rojas Training Run

Joy Rojas is an ultramarathon runner who holds the distinction of being the first Filipina to run across the Philippines. In May 2008, she will embark on Takbong Pangarap, a cross-country run through the United States of America that aims to show that there is "no limit to the Filipino spirit." When Rojas completes her course, she will become the first Filipina and the first Southeast Asian woman to have run across the United States.

[edit] Career

An active racer from 1995 to 2002, Rojas finished in the top ten of several prestigious 42 kilometer races during that period, including the PAL Marathon, the Milo Marathon and the Pasig River Heritage Marathon. However, she stopped competitive racing in 2002 since she wanted to enjoy running for running's sake and not for the sake of recording new best times or earning prizes.

Since then, she has participated in the Visayan leg of Fr. Roberto Reyes' Trans-Philippines run, managing to go from Kalibo, Aklan to Eastern Samar in just 40 days, and covered the distance between Baguio and Banaue in three days. She also regularly runs a 100 kilometer course from Manila to Tagaytay and from Tagaytay to Nasugbu, Batangas, as well as an alternate route from Makati to Tanay, Rizal.

In 2005, she embarked on the Trans-Philippines run and covered 2,000 kilometers from Davao City to Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte in 46 days, becoming the first Filipina to cross the country from south to north on foot.
