Jorge Camara

Dr. Jorge G. Camara is a Filipino ophthalmologist who performed the first teleophthalmology operation. He is a graduate of the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. His paper "Teleophthalmology: The use of real-time telementoring to remove an orbital tumor," published in the medical journal Ophthalmology, marked the first time in history that such an operation was performed. In this surgery, Camara, an orbital specialist, guided general ophthalmologist Dr. Susan Senftin in the removal of a lateral orbital tumor from a site 210 miles away on another island. The doctors employed two-way closed circuit televisions in their communication.
