Ikaw ang Aking Tahanan
Ikaw Ang Aking Tahanan (You are my only home) is an OPM alternative rock song by the song writer extraordinaire and former front man of award-winning Pinoy band, Sugarfree, Ebe Dancel. The song is the fourth track of the album “Rock Rizal (album)” a compilation of tribute songs from various well-known and upcoming Philippine musicians in line with the 150th celebration of the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. Ikaw Ang Aking Tahanan is written by the now-solo artist Dancel who has also written most of Sugarfree’s songs. It can also be found on Dancel’s debut album “Dalawang Mukha ng Pagibig, which was released on late September 2011, months after the single was released as a free download on Rock Ed Philippines Facebook account and on other Pinoy music websites.
Rock Rizal Preparation
Ebe Dancel, together with other artists included in the “Rock Rizal (album)”, attended seminar and classes arranged by National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in order to thoughtfully prepare for the songwriting procedure of the tracks. History Professors recommended by NHCP also gave their aid to the artists including Dancel.
Composition and Inspiration
In Dancel’s Ikaw ang tahanan, as a perspective on Jose Rizal, he manages to humanize the Philippines late national hero by casting the country as a distant loved one. Possibly, this expresses Rizal’s emotions almost in an authentic during his long time education and significant endeavors in Europe: “Di makatulog nang mahimbing, sa kamang di’ akin (Could not sleep soundly, on a bed that is not mine). Naturally, like several Sugarfree songs, its melody is a knife in the heart, a quality the singer-songwriter still proves to be capable of churning out.
The song almost revolves around F# chord in general E tuning. As drumbeats starts, the Sugarfree signature is almost recognizable with the mellow rhythm that is immediately established from the first count. Although as good as melodies are progressing, the most redeeming quality of the song is the wide range of Dancel’s singing voice that goes very well as usual with the band and the quality and ideology of Dancel’s lyrics. The song does not also go without an intricate guitar solo at the bridge which gives the song its rock edge.
Ebe Dancel also played Ikaw Ang Tahanan in the tribute concert, “Rock Rizal: Celebrating Jose Rizal's life & works through rock & roll” at SM Mall of Asia on September 16, 2011 together with other well-known artists who were also in the main cast of the Rock Rizal album. Shortly after the said event, Dancel featured the free downloadable single in his very own album launch in Teatrino at The Greenhills Promenade and from then on, was included in his album tour.
