Gerardo “Gerry” Ablaza is the current President and Chief Executive Officer of the utility-arm of the Ayala Group, Manila Water Company. He is also a Senior Manging Director of the Ayala Corporation and a member of the management committee of the Ayala Group. He also served the group in various capacities. He is a graduate of De La Salle University. He has won several business leadership awards including CNBC Asia Business Leader Award and Best Asian Telecom CEO.

Education

Ablaza graduated summa cum laude from De La Salle University in 1974 with an AB degree major in Mathematics (Honors Program).

Professional profile

Prior to joining the Ayala Group, Ablaza spent 14 years with Citibank and was the Vice-President and Country Business Manager for the Philippines and Guam of Citibank, N.A. for its Global Consumer Banking Business. Before this, he was Vice-President for Consumer Banking of Citibank, N.A. Singapore. He became the bank’s representative to the board of directors of City Trust Banking Corporation and its various subsidiaries.

He has occupied the highest executive position in several Ayala Group companies. He was the President and CEO of the telecom-arm of the group, Globe Telecom, Inc. from 1998 to 2009, and is now the Co-Vice Chairman. He was then appointed President and CEO of Manila Water Company (MWC) in June 30, 2010.

Ablaza also served as Senior Senior Managing Director of Ayala Corporation and a member of the Ayala Group management committee since 1998. He serves as member of the Board of Director of Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), BPI Family Savings Bank, BPI Card Finance Corporation, Azalea International Venture Partners Limited, Asiacom Philippines, Inc., LiveIT Investment Ltd., BPI Globe BanKO Inc., Integron Managed Solutions. He served as a Director for Integrated Microelectronics from November 2009 to July 2010, and Stream Global Services.

He serves as Chairman of AAA Water Corporation, Manila Water Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd, Manila Water South Asia Holdings Pte. Ltd., and Manila Water Total Solutions Corp. He is also the Vice-Chairman of Laguna AAA Water Corporation and Jindal Manila Water Development Company Ltd. He is also the Chairman and President of Manila Water International Solutions, Inc. and Northern Waterworks and Rivers of Cebu, Inc.; and President of MWC Foundation. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of AC Capital from January 1 to June 30, 2010 with directorship position in Azalea Technology Investments, Inc., HRMall Holdings Limited, HR Mall Inc., Integreon, Inc., Affinity Express Holdings Limited, NewBridge International Investments Ltd., Stream Global Services., RETC (Renewable Energy Test Center ), ACST Business Holdings, Inc., AG Holdings Limited (HK), Ayala Automotive Holdings Corporation, Ayala Aviation Corporation, Michigan Power, Inc., MPM Noodles Corporation, Purefoods International Investment Limited.

He is a trustee for Ayala Foundation Inc. and Gawad Kalinga.

Awards and recognitions

Ablaza made history when he was the first Filipino CEO to be awarded the Asia Business Leader of the Year by CNBC in 2004. The same year, while still the CEO of Globe Telecom, he was awarded by Telecom Asia as the Best Asian Telecom CEO.
