Gardo Versoza (real name Mennen Torres Polintan, born 8 November 1969), is a popular Filipino actor who has appeared in over forty movies and dozens of television shows. His most famous role is in the movie Machete II, where he portrayed the lead character, David, a deceased nude model whose wooden statue magically came to life.

Career

He started out in films such as Sabik Sa Halik, Machete II, Halimuyak Ng Babae and Kirot. Later, he went on to star in action movies such as Cesar Climaco, Mison, and Ka Hector. He also appeared in critically acclaimed movies such as the 1998 Marilou Diaz-Abaya biopic of Jose Rizal, where he played the role of hero Andres Bonifacio; and Sisa, where he played the role of Jose Rizal / Pepe. He has recently tried his hand at comedy by starring in Pinoy Blonde.

His success is not limited to movies alone. He has also been the focal point of some of the highest rated shows in Philippine television including Mula sa Puso, where he portrayed Domingo, and It Might Be You as Camilo San Carlos.

In the television series, Sugo, Gardo played the role of Apo Abukay, an evil chieftain who possesses black magic coming from the anito or spirit of darkness. Apo Abukay is characterized by his embrace of the old world or the pre-Spanish era. He battled the Spanish friars who came to the Philippines and it was only through the intervention of Conde Vergonze, a blind but powerful warrior, that he was defeated.

As of late, Gardo has been busy with guest appearances in various shows in both ABS-CBN and GMA-7. He has been spotted in Bubble Gang, Maalaala Mo Kaya, Hokus Pokus, Magpakailanman, Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin, and Amaya. He is currently involved in a another GMA 7series, Aso ni San Roque. He is also taking up directing classes and hopes to be a director some day.

In popular culture

Gardo Versoza depicted as a World War II hero on Hay! Men!

Versoza became prominent in the 90s due to his role in Machete II and in a number of popular titillating films. His provocative roles earned him the reputation as "Asia's Sexiest Man" during the said period.

Recently, Versoza was the subject of an Internet meme on humor blog Hay! Men! Ang blog ng mga tunay na lalake sa panahong nakakalalake!, where he was alleged by some of the blog's commenters as the hero of World War II against Nazi Germany.
