[edit] Early life
Manzano was born on 14 September 1955 in San Francisco, California to Filipino parents. His place of birth guaranteed him automatic citizenship from the United States, while his parental origin also made him a Filipino.
He grew up in the United States and, at the age of 17, joined the country's armed forces, serving for four years. Buoyed up by his desire to act, he moved to the Philippines to pursue a career in show business.
He starred in movies such as “Kapag Puso'y Sinugatan” and “Romansa,” receiving praises for his roles. He was cast as villains in many films, but later on played lead character in dramatic films through which he cemented himself as a superb actor. In 1991, he won a Famas award for best supporting actor in the movie, “Kaaway ng Batas.” Due to his achievements, he was elected president of the actors’ group Kapisanan ng mga Artista sa Pelikulang Pilipino in the 1990s.
[edit] Political career
Banking on his popularity, Manzano moved into political scene in 1998 when he ran for vice mayor of Makati City. He won in the election, but his proclamation was suspended when his citizenship was contested by his rival's supporter as ground for his disqualification. The Comelec eventually ruled in favor of him, clearing the way for his proclamation as vice mayor. During his term, he became the national president of the Vice Mayor's League of the Philippines. After serving for three years, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for Mayor of Makati City in 2001, losing to Jejomar Binay.
In 2004, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo appointed him as first chairman of the Optical Media Board, a government agency tasked with combating optical media piracy. He resigned the position in August 2009 and was replaced by action star Ronnie Ricketts.
It was revealed that he considered running in the Philippine senatorial race in 2007, but later backed out despite the backing of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. He cited his lack of funds to do a nationwide campaign as his reason for backing out.
[edit] Vice President
On November 13, 2009, Lakas-Kampi-CMD proclaimed him as Gilberto Teodoro's running mate in the May 2010 election.
