History

The roots of Angelicum College was an idea by Fr. Rogelio Alarcon, a Dominican priest, who proposed a school that would cater to the individual needs of each student and would discard the traditional concept of measuring a student's ability through grading. Backed up by his comparative studies on the different systems of education at the University of Santo Tomas Graduate School, he proposed the idea of a non-graded school to the Dominican province.

The proposal was approved in 1972, a few months after he was appointed First Provincial of the Philippine Dominican Province. The school was to be called the Angelicum School, after one of the Dominican house of studies in Rome. The school opened on July 5, 1972, with 315 male students, 9 teachers, six classrooms and a small library housed at the Dominican seminary. The school intially offered only grade school and high school education.

Two years later, in 1974, the first batch of female students were accepted. In 1977 the St. Antoninus School, a division for special needs students, was opened. Angelicum then expanded to include a school in Jaro, Iloilo.

In 1995 the College Department was opened, and the school was renamed into the Angelicum College in May 1996. The Home Study Program of the College was recognized in August 1996, and the college formally launched the home-study based Re-entry Education Alternatives for the Poor (REAP) Program in January 1999.
