“Ang Kalupi” (The Purse) The first Tagalog one-act sarswela (musical theater) written by Severino Reyes in 1902. Its music is by Fulgencio Tolentino. This was first staged on 3 April 1902 by the Compañia Lirico-Dramatica Tagala de Gatchalian e Ilagan at the Teatro Libertad in Manila. This was created to turn the audience away from the overstated and unrealistic komedya and towards the more natural and realistic one.
This play in Tagalog narrates how the married couple renew their vow of love and fidelity when the husband gets into vices as drinking alcohol and having affairs with geishas or club entertainers.
