Dr. Andrew L. Tan is a Filipino-Chinese businessman. He is the Chairman of the Board of the publicly-traded Alliance Global Group, Inc., which owns Megaworld Corporation , Emperador Distillers and the Golden Arches Development Corporation. In 2010, he is listed by Forbes as the fifth richest Filipino with a networth of USD 2 billion.
Tan also serves as the Chairman of the Board of Empire East Land Holdings, Inc., Fil-Estate Land, Inc., Alliance Global Brands, Inc., Suntrust Properties, Inc., Adams Properties, Inc., Consolidated Distillers of the Far East, Inc. and Emperador Distillers, Inc. He also serves in the boards of Megaworld subsidiaries, Eastwood Cyber One Corporation, Inc., Megaworld Cayman Islands, Inc., Megaworld Central Properties, Inc., Forbes Town Properties & Holdings, Inc., and Townsquare Development, Inc. He is also Chairman of the Board and President of Megaworld Newport Property Holdings, Inc., The Bar Beverage, Inc., Megaworld Land, Inc., Megaworld Globus Asia, Inc., Richmonde Hotel Group International Limited and Yorkshire Holdings, Inc. He sits in the boards of The Andresons Group, Inc. and Raffles & Co. He is also a Director and Treasurer of Andresons Global Inc.
Tan was born to poor parents in Fujian China. His father worked as a factory worker and his mother was a housewife. He lived for sometime in Hong Kong, where he shared an apartment with other families. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of the East (UE) with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. It was widely known then that Tan often walked to school because he had no money for fare.
At the age of 25, Tan tried his luck in business by opening a wholesale trading firm that imported appliances and sold them to appliance centers. Two years later, at age 27, Tan made his first million and according to him, it was equivalent to P20 million in today’s money.
Tan would later on move to the real estate business and started a small residential condominium in Greenhills, San Juan. Finding success in the field, he set his sights for something bigger and eventually, Megaworld Corporation was born in 1989 and was listed in 1994. Its landmark projects are the Eastwood City and McKinley Hill. Tan was the first property developer to pioneer the live-work-play concept.
Tan also foresaw two potential markets that were still unknown to other investors: the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) and the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) market. He saw the need to develop middle-income homes for the first market.
Tan also built other township projects in Metro Manila City Place complex in Binondo, Manila; the 25-hectare Newport City complex beside the Villamor Golf Course and the Manhattan Garden City complex at the Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City.
Tan acquired the Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc. in 2003. He becmae the biggest hotelier in the country when he joined the tourism industry by developing Resorts World Manila with Malaysia gaming company, Genting Berhard Group. Hotels under Resorts World Manila are the six-star, Maxims Hotel and Gaming Center; the five-star Marriott Hotel; and the Remington Hotel. He also developed Pasay’s Newport City.
Food and Beverage
In 2007, Tan’s AGI acquired 100 percent of the Emperador Distillers, Inc. (EDI) from the Anderson’s Group and other investors. EDI operates three brands namely Emperador Brandy, Generoso and The Bar. For his Emperador Brandy, Tan reinvented the brand by making it synonymous with success. He instructed advertisers to refrain from using sexy models, and instead associate it with hard work, drive, ambition and success. Reader’s Digest awarded Emperador Brandy as the Most Trusted Brand in 2004, 2006 and 2007.
Quick Service Restaurant
In 2005, Tan’s holding company acquired 49 percent common shares of Golden Arches Development Corporation (GADC), the mother franchisee of McDonalds in the Philippines. In September 2006, George Yang, former chairman of Alliance Global relinquish his position as chairman to Andrew Tan.
