Education

Tamano graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University with an AB Economics degree in 1992, and later law school, graduating in 1996. He took up postgraduate studies at the University of the Philippines, earning a masters' degree in Public Administration in 2003.

He then earned a scholarship to Harvard University, graduating with a Master of Laws degree in 2005. He was the first Filipino Muslim to graduate from the Ivy League university, and was chosen as the commencement speaker at their graduation ceremonies.

Tamano is the first Filipino Muslim to receive a Harvard scholarship. However because he was supporting his family, his wife had to mortgage their house. While at Harvard, Tamano also worked as a librarian.

Career

Tamano first practiced law as an associate of the Mendoza Law Office after graduating in 1996. He later joined Kapunan Tamano Villadolid & Associates as a senior partner since 2004. After finishing his studies at Harvard, he returned to the Philippines in 2005, where he was a frequent guest analyst on legal issues on the ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC).

In 2007 the United Opposition offered to include him in the senatorial line-up, but Tamano refused and instead joined as the spokesperson of the party. He was later appointed president of the Pamantasang Lungsod ng Maynila by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim on August 09, 2007.

He is also a lecturer on constitutional law at PLM and the Far Eastern University Institute of Law, and also on legal writing at the Ateneo Law School.

2010 elections

Campaign manifesto

On being a Muslim

Tamano said that there is still a stigma on being a Muslim, citing instances after the Maguindanao massacre when people asked if his middle initial “A.”stood for Ampatuan. According to Tamano, there is still discrimination against Muslims but he said that there is less of it as generations move forward. He also attributes it to the existence of a Muslim diaspora. He said that discrimination should be addressed.

On Nacionalista Party

Tamano was initially an independent candidate and when different parties started to invite him, he chose NP because he believes in the leadership of the party's standard bearer, Manny Villar.

On the C5 controversy

In an interview with Blogwatch, Tamano believes that there was no corruption on Villar's part. He said that most people cannot grasp case's minute details because unlike him, he had attended senate hearings. The lack of evidence also presumes the innocence of Villar. He said that given the evidence, he will withdraw from the race.

Plans for the youth

Being the youngest of the candidates, Tamano conveyed that the youth needs a leader who can relate with them and articulate their concerns. He pushes for free education such as in, the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila of which he was head and job opportunities after graduation. According to Tamano, the budget for education is getting smaller whereas the student population is getting larger. If elected, he said that he will amend the law on automatic appropriations and reduce the country's debt allocation to 35% from 40% and reallocate the remaining 5% to scholarship and health.

On taxes

Tamano said that he believes in shifting the tax burden, rationalize the VAT and plug the leaks. According to Tamano, it is a fallacy to say that the poor are not taxed enough when with every small thing they buy, they feel the burden of VAT.

Tamano is also for the amendment of the PLM's constitution.

Private life

Born on October 2, 1970, Tamano is the eighth son of the late Senator Mamintal “Mike” Tamano and civic leader Hadja Putri Zorayda Abbas Tamano. He is married to Atty. Rowena Kapunan, and they have two children.
