Rizal Day is celebrated throughout the Philippines, but the major celebration is held at Rizal Park, more popularly known as the Luneta in Manila. The event is highlighted by flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Jose Rizal Monument. Similar ceremonies are held at the Rizal shrines in Calamba, Laguna and Dapitan in Zamboanga, and the Rizal monument in Baguio City.
Observance of Rizal day
In 2009, National Historical Institute chairperson Ambeth Ocampo sought to move the observance of Rizal Day from December 30 to June 19, which is Rizal's birthday. He sent a letter to Congress to express approval of two pending bills seeking to move Rizal Day observance to June 19. House Bill 5408 was already passed on third reading by the House of Representatives on 10 December 2008. Moving the celebration date, however, requires amendments to Executive Order No. 292 or the Administrative Code of 1987.
