Gaspar A. Vibal
Gaspar A. Vibal (born 6 December 1957) is the executive director and publisher of Vibal Foundation. He created the foundation's four flagship projects: Filipiniana.net, a digital library; WikiPilipinas.org, a free online encyclopedia of Philippine content; Philippine Online Chronicles, a news aggregator and recommendation filter; and E-turo, a free e-learning portal for Filipino teachers and learners. These four knowledge portals give away free and open information to all Filipinos under Vibal Foundation's Cybersmart program which advocates open knowledge.
A lifelong lover and collector of books, Vibal has also begun to publish pioneering books on Philippine culture, history and society under Vibal Foundation's print division and its associated imprints. His publishing program reflects both his commitment and his eclecticism. One of his most noteworthy endeavors is the creation of the imprint Filipinia Clasica which he patterned after Carlos Quirino's Filipiniana Book Guild and which aims to keep Philippine books deemed culturally and historically significant in print. Alongside is Academica Filipina Plus, a series of scholarly anthologies which feature the best of contemporary academic scholarship from a wide range of disciplines and representing diverse theoretical perspectives.
Vibal went to high school at the Ateneo de Manila. He earned a degree in economics (cum laude) from the University of the Philippines in Diliman. In 1983 he moved to New York to study in the Book and Magazine Publishing Institute of New York University.
In 2006 Vibal returned to the Philippines and founded Filipiniana.net with Spanish historian and editor-in-chief Carlos Madrid, Jaime Marco, managing editor Alfred U. Ursua and webmaster Richard Grimaldo. WikiPilipinas.org, first branded as Wikipiniana, followed soon afterward and instantly became an online sensation among blogging circles and Philippine enthusiasts.
