Eugenio Torre is a Filipino chess player and the first chess grandmaster in Asia. Torre is a member of the Philippine chess team for the November 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. He participated in the men's team event.
Education and career
Torre was born in Iloilo City on 3 November 1951. During his childhood years he played chess with his father and brother. His father saw that Eugene had the potential to excel in chess so he trained him and entered him in tournaments.
He continued to be active in tournaments during his college years, to the point that he had to choose between the game and his studies. He decided to become a full time chess player. Torre has admitted that not being able to finish his studies was something he regretted.
He made his way to the Chess Olympiads where the best chess players came to compete. He gained the title of grandmaster in 1974, becoming Asia’s first grandmaster of chess. He finished the year with a rating of 2520.
Torre continues to play chess and is still active in different chess-related organizations.
