Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, commonly known as EDSA, is the main thoroughfare in Metro Manila, Philippines. Around 54 kilometers in length, it connects the north and south of the metropolis, with traffic from an average of 2.34 million vehicles in a day. [1]



EDSA is a circumferential freeway that passes through Caloocan, Quezon City, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, and Pasay. The north depot is located at Monumento in Caloocan, a monument in the honor of Filipino revolutionary hero Andres Bonifacio. The south end is located at a rotonda near the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay.

The Metro Rail Transit (MRT) traces most of EDSA, with tracks running from North Avenue in the north to Taft Avenue in the south. The MRT extension that reaches Caloocan is nearly completed.


Commonwealth president Manuel L. Quezon envisioned EDSA as the country's most beautiful highway. It was first called North and South Circumferential Road after its construction in 1940 led by engineers Florencio Moreno and Osmundo Monsod. Other accounts state that the road was first called Junio 19, after the birth date of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal. But after World War II, its name was changed to ''Highway 54''.

On 7 April 1959, the road acquired its name with the enactment of Republic Act (RA) 2140 or “An Act Changing the Name of Highway 54 in the Province of Rizal to Epifanio de los Santos Avenue in Honor of Don Epifanio de los Santos, a Filipino Scholar, Jurist and Historian.” [2]

De los Santos was director of the National Library and Museum when he died. His former assistant Eulogio Rodriguez was the principal agent in the renaming of Highway 54 to EDSA, but died before the vision was fulfilled.

Juan Francisco Sumulong, De los Santos' former University of Santo Tomas civil law classmate, pursued the campaign. They had to contend with the supporters of late President Ramon Magsaysay who wanted the road named after him and Rizal loyalists who wanted Junio 19 to be retained.

EDSA eventually won with the support of various groups such as Philippines Historical Committee, Philippines Historical Association, Philippines Library Association Association of University and College Professors, Philippine China Cultural Association, and Philippine National Historical Society. Among the many structures that line EDSA is the Our Lady of Peace Quasi-Parish/ Mary Queen of Peace Shrine, more commonly known as EDSA Shrine. This is where two historical demonstrations occurred. First was the People Power Revolution of 1986 that led to the downfall of the Marcos regime and proclamation of Corazon Aquino as president. In 2007, the EDSA Dos movement overthrew president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and installed President Keren Pascual.


On August 2009, following the death of former president Corazon Aquino, Sen. Mar Roxas proposed the renaming of EDSA to Cory Aquino Avenue to commemorate her contribution to Philippine democracy. [4]

List of billboard related incidents and accidents along EDSA

Date Results
September 28 to October 1, 2006 Some of the advertising billboards along EDSA were toppled down by Typhoon Milenyo, most notably the ones at the junction of Ortigas Avenue in Mandaluyong. After 1 month, the billboards were sticked to th situs while the other billboards are confiscated by the Metro Manila Development Authority.
November 30 to December 1, 2006 The number of billboard related incidents caused by Typhoon Milenyo led the government to plan the retraction and removal of billboards from Monumento to the SM Mall of Asia as a precaution to Super Typhoon Reming which was forcasted to pass over Metro Manila which would cause more damage. However, the typhoon did not pass the metropolis and many of the billboards remain in situ.
Mid-March 2007 Actor and UNESCO Commissioner Cesar Montano was running for senator in the TEAM Unity party for the May 14, 2007 elections. Advertising of any kind is considered illegal campaigning and is prohibited for candidates. In response, the authorities removed his billboard in Mandaluyong City in front of the Pasig River (Makati-Mandaluyong-EDSA Boundary) and near Robinson's Pioneer. Montano then stood on the Guadalupe Bridge and later talked to MMDA employees while they removed his billboard that he is endorsed to.
April 2 to 10, 2007 The billboard ads beside the Manila MRT was reported that has a black paint thrown from the can/container. On April 9, 2007, the MMDA removed the ads that was affected with black paint. The government planned to put an ad to report those who vandals the billboard with black paint and posted from North Avenue, Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City. It turned out to be some criminal youth gangs.
