Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education was established in 1945 as one of the departments of the Catholic Welfare Organization. It was called Episcopal Commission on Education and Religious Instruction then. It was later changed to Episcopal Commission on Cateches and Catholic Education in 1988 because there was a need to give emphasis on catechesis and education.

ECCCI is assisted by the Advisory Council for the Ministry of Catechesis consist of representatives from regions and from catechetical centers.

Main Areas of Responsibility of the ECCCI are

a. assist and serve the diocese by being an information center in catechetical development.
b. supervise the National Catechetical Office of the Philippines.
c. conduct studies and make recommendations on specific applications of ecclesiastical decrees affecting Catholic education and related policies or state legislation.
d. coordinate with Catholic education associations in the Philippines in the promotion of Catholic education.
e. helps in the promotion of effective Campus Ministry.
