Charo Ronquillo (b. Laguna, 1988) is a Filipina model based in New York City who has been dubbed the “Asian Kate Moss.” Standing 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 110 pounds, she was 2nd runner-up at the Ford Models’ Supermodel of the World competition in New York in 2006, the first Asian model to make it to the top 3 of the international model search.
Personal background and education
Ronquillo was born in Cabuyao, Laguna in 1988. As a young girl she was “tomboyish” until she entered high school, when she began to pay attention to her appearance and let her black hair grow. With her long hair, smooth brown skin, and towering height, she was discovered while shooting hoops at an arcade. She auditioned for the 2nd batch of the GMA 7 show Starstruck and made it to the top 60 before she was eliminated.
She was a freshman at the University of Perpetual Help majoring in business management when she joined the 2005 Philippine Ford Supermodel Search as a self-trained model. She won just about every award in the competition, including the grand prize. In 2006, she went on to compete in the international level of the competition in New York, one of the few Asians to compete internationally. She was just 18 years old at that time.
After making it to the top 3 of the Ford competition, Ronquillo was given a $100,000 dollar contract by the Ford Modeling Agency. Since then, she has been residing in New York. Over the past few years, she has worked at a number of modeling jobs in the United States, including the fall 2006 Lacoste, Lela Rose, Nanette Lepore, and Zero Maria Cornejo shows in New York, the 2007 Ann Taylor and Macy’s catalogs and the 2008 J. Crew catalog. She was photographed for Ralph Lauren’s American Living in 2008 as well.
She has modeled for labels and designers including Lacoste, Lela Rose, Nanette Lapore, Zero Maria Cornejo, Tory Burch, Antonio Berardi, Kenneth Cole, Mac Cosmetics Barbie Collection, Zaldy by Gwen Stefani, BCBG, Sisley and Benetton New York fashion Week.
She worked at the Benetton New York Fashion Week F/W 2009-2010 for Elie Tahari and Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture FW 2011-2012 for Julien Fournié and Eric Tibusch. She was one of Chloe Dao's models on the finale of Project Runway season 2.
Ronquillo has appeared on numerous fashion and beauty editorials like the Spanish Vogue, Indian Vogue, Teen Vogue, Marie Claire Paris, Marie Claire Paris US, ELLE Vietnam, Cosmopolitan US and Glamour.
She has also appeared in advertisements for Old Navy, Macy's, and Sak's Fifth Avenue.
