History

Babae para sa Kaunlaran was founded in 2005 and was then known as Kababaihan Para sa Inang Bayan (KABAYAN). It started as a grassroots organization that provided livelihood training as well as medical, dental, and educational services to poor communities in Luzon and Visayas.

It changed its name to BABAE KA when it ran for a congressional seat as a party list in the 2007 elections.

May 2007 Elections

BABAE KA was approved to run for a Congressional seat in 2007 but was unsuccessful. It would have pushed for an Equal Employment Opportunity bill had it succeeded.

The group blamed their loss on the hundreds of millions of pesos spent by existing party lists in congress as well as the lack of information and understanding about the party list system in the country. According to them, they were a victim of black propaganda.

Objectives

BABAE KA aims to promote and protect the rights of women and Filipinos. It seeks to "inculcate self-preservation and respect" in women and to harness "women power in the development and promotion of innate Filipino virtues." The group’s method involves dialogue, education, and development of enterprises for women.

Accomplishments

According to its website, BABAE KA has served over 45,000 members of urban poor communities in the country since its previous incarnation as KABAYAN. It offers free medical and dental missions, hospitalization aid, and livelihood assistance.
